how easy is it?
special tools
just give me a quick rundown of what is needed and about how much it would cost to do it yourself.
4.10 gears.

Read the last post I made on this thread. As for special tools, dial guage and make up tool to hold the yoke whilst you're tightening/loosening the pinion bearing.
(I haven't forgotten about your British number plate! leave it with me)

That's English for : I'm on the case,(or) I'm looking into it,(or) I'd forgotten about it but will get on it now....etc!
I need to get round to my father-in-law's garage and find my buried MK1 Escort to see if the number plate you asked about is still on it!

Are you just changing gears, no bearings or anything? You'll need a good impact gun, brass punch, big hammer, prybars, micrometer, dial indicator, press, setup bearing is nice, marking compound, pinion shims and carrier shims. What brand of gearset are you going to use, that makes a world of difference.
