I have read other forums and it says to fill the differential to the bottom of the plug but i dont have any plug i just have a long tube coming out of the top and a solid cover how much gear oil do i need?

The plug is not on the cover, it should be on the pinion snout. The long tube out the top is the vent, solid covers are standard on GM 10/12 bolts. It will be a plug with a 3/8" square opening, any 3/8" drive ratchet and extension should be able to remove it.
