A friend at work has a 2002 Chevy 1500 4x4 . the rear end has locked up like it has a locker not sure if its a bad limited slip or broke spider gear

is this the same as the older 10-bolts ?? internals wise

locked up like it has a locker..... can we get a better description of the symptoms?? locking up like it has a locker would not be abnormal. my truck has a locker, and when it slips, it locks.

are you saying its locking up as if it has a spool? where it is never unlocking?

to my knowledge the guts of the axles are the same. and a 2002 would either have an open diff, or a gov locker (gov bomb). its a great design but does not respond well to shock trauma. look at the build codes in his glovebox, or whereever they are on a 02 truck, and look for G80, thats the code for the locker IIRC.

If its supposed to be an open diff, and its locked up, then somethin broke. any grinding, popping, ratcheting or anything to that effect?

also, what was he doing with the truck when it "locked"

Its bone stock and she just street drives it its locked up like it has a spool

I'm sure theres internal damage just want to find out what years I can rob for parts

should just be a corporate 8.5in 10 bolt. just about any and every 1/2 ton chevy made from pre-90's up to current should be a direct fit. At least to my knowledge. obviously the closer you are to the same model year the better your piece of mind, but i think theres quite a bit of leeway. As stated, if she has a G80 build code, its the gov bomb rear end, and they are known for great operation, but not great strength.

also, of note is that "normal" driving in alaska, is not like "normal" driving elsewere. ;)

things like wheel spin on ice, with the sudden catch of the gov locker is what would contribute to the break. Although most often it turns it into an open diff, im not quite as used to it locking it up permanently.

Could be a posi depending on what you consider to be "locked up". I have a rig with posi and it'll actually screech the tires and lay down rubber during a 3 point turn. As soon as one tire is off the ground it'll unload.

yeah, usually when they fail they fail to open .

I did a little more research seems the the newer trucks have a 8.6 inch ring gear! but I cross referanced some limited slips on summit and it calls the same diff for the 8.6 and the older 8.5..............

I told her to sell it and buy a D-max LOL

My buddies 03 locked up permanently at 100k, it also broke the end of the axle off where the c-clip stays, the disc brake bracket is the only thing holding the axle in. We couldn't get the center pin out for the life of us, so the whole thing was trash. We ended up getting a 14sf 6lug to replace it with.

When my 2000 suburban locks up, it will unlock only after driving down the road about 50 feet.

ok thanks guys the truck has 120,000 on it I just got back from getting a 2003 rear axle with 65,000 miles so thats the plan if we can fix the axle thats in it

my buddies has been locked up solid for the past 4 months.
