Searched high and low. Would a '79 chevy 3/4 ton 4x4 have a 10 bolt or D44. Couldn't tell as the truck was at a parts yard with 2" of rain water, oil, piss and ebola floating underneath the front end and couldn't get a good look at the diff. Would it most likely be 4.10 gears too???

1979 is the last year of the D44 so make sue the production date is a late '78 or a early '79 i believe april is the switch in years:confused:. In most cases if it had a 350ci. motor it will have 4.10 gears or if it has the 454ci. it will have 3.73s. if it has a tow package this info is null & void. the easiest way is to just check the sticker on the inside of the glove box. if the glove box has piss and ebola floating in it you might not want to mess with this truck:haha:

Yeah, the ground around it seemed to be an area of a pick a part yard that everything drained to and grew stagnent. Almost made you vomit. I pulled the vin tag from the dash and looked it up and it had a 400sbc stock but at some point the owner put a GM 350 crate in it, at least that's what the valve covers said.

Could be a 10 bolt or D44, more likely a 10 bolt IME.

Gears are probably 4.10's, but you can't really know unless you pull the cover.

Thanks fellas. I'm going to several other parts yards on Saturday to find one that I can actually get underneath without catching something I'll have to be quareteened for. I'd rather not start bleeding from every orifice, if you know what I mean.

Are you looking for a D44 specificly? As far I figure the 10bolt and D44 are pretty much the same strength wise. And as said '79 could be either.I had a '79 Sub and it had the 10bolt.I don't know when it was built though.

Yeah, I know the 10 bolt and D44 are about the same but I just want a D44 because that is what I currently have in 6-lug and I'm anal.
