So it is a given that my rear end is toast due to damaged gov loc. I have a good one on my wrecked 89 K5. There are some pitted spider gears but overall its good. Now do I have to swap the rear end from damaged truck to the new truck or can I simply remove the guts for one and place it into the other? I noticed two bolts that seem to be holding the guts in the housing.

I just finished redoing the brakes etc on damaged rear end before I realized it was damaged. This sucks! I need some sound advice here.

Unless you need to set up the gears in the new axle, I would transfer the brake backing plates and drums.

Well I gave it some thought. The bad rearend has good spider gears and the good rearend has pitted spider gears. So I'll build one from the two.

I've seen lots of units on ebay. The question now is what would be an upgrade to my current rearend?

If you want an upgrade, try an Eaton E-locker for a part time locker or the tried and true Detroit Locker.
