im about to buy a 2000 silverado i think they have the 8.6 ring gear?i was wondering if i could use a older 8.5 limited slip setup?will this work? The rear is blown got stuck on a railroad tracks stealing iron.:haha:the ring and pinion looks pretty good but the side gears got the worst of it.

Im not 100% for sure, but i dont see why u couldnt use it...but why would u WANT to? especially if its an older gov-lock unit. You could always just get an Auburn posi or something similiar new for like 400$ or go to the junk yard and get a whole 10bolt drum to drum for like 50$ just my .02

This is a disk brake rear,Junkyards in south jersey you cant even find a nbs gmc/chevy truck if you do they want atleast 500+ for the rear.If i buy a drum rear then i have to buy the conversion brackets, cailpers, rotors it adds.If i was going to convert something to disk it will be a 14bolt.And about the railroad part just to let you know that was not me.A guy before me needed his fix and found a good size pile of iron on the other side of the tracks. And another question i have is the carriers that have 2 open windows they are open diffs right? The ones that have 1 small window is limited slip?please correct if im wrong.

You have to look into the windows and see if there is just open gears or gears and a clutch pack with springs or the governor just outside of the spiders on a gov lock axle.was looking through here http://www.my4by.com/gm-10-bolt-8.5-inch-vs-8.6-inch.html
And the 8.6 can go into a 8.5 with conversion bearings but there isn't a bearing set that will allow a 8.5 carrier to go into a 8.6 axle. Different size carrier bearings.

Thank you for that link!Guys helped out alot,Im going to call around some more tomorrow looking for another rear might have one for 225.

I was looking more into it and the 8.5 hd had the same carrier as the 8.6. Not sure what that would've come in though.you could put a Detroit or something in it too and make the axle stronger. 225 is a good price on that axle as the newer ones are costing a lot still.
