Howdy.. Here's my situation.. Tell me what you would do on a small budget (under $500).

Keep in mind I'm also considering selling this truck in the near future.

Bearings in the old stocker (open 10 bolt rear) seem to have gone out. sure sounds like hell driving down the road - I can grab the pinion yoke and wobble it a bit along with lots of play in any direction. I'm on a budget but but somewhat flexible. I DO need to get it fixed within 30 days (sooner the better).

OK.. I found a master rebuild kit for about $70 with bearings seals shims etc. I haven't inspected the axle yet but I'm assuming the gears have been roughed up as good as the bearings. OK, I found a new carrier with 3.73 gears and alburn posi for about $175. already have good working brakes. going this route would leave me needing new gears in the front to get my 4wd back. I'd be out under $300 and on the road again. I was thinking maybe taking the gears out the front end and just getting the rebuild kit. what would you do to keep this build as cheap as possible. I of course would like to end up with some better traction in the back since I'm losing the 4wd for a while either way I go. any suggestions?

I've been reading up here about rebuilding the 10 bolt and in my searches I can guarantee you just about every thread on the topic leans towards putting in a 14 bolt ff. Ok I could see myself doing this if I wasn't considering selling the truck and so concerned about gas milage on my commutes. I'm happy with my 33's and I don't see any reason to do this in fear of losing ground clearance, adding weight, and needing a new set of wheels. however, I can pickup a 14b for under $100 (needs brakes). What would absolutely need to be done to make it fit? how much gas milage loss might be noticed with the 14b swap?
