10 bolt vs. d44

What is the actuall difference how can you tell. Also are they both the same strength wise.
 
Like most of the guys said they're close enough that it's more a matter of what you can get your hands on vs. which one is "better".

FWIW, When I picked up my 3/4 axles I went with a 10b just because the gearing happened to match the 14b.
 
only way i can really tell is the 44 has a harder more protruding cover on it.

ive always stuck with 10bolts just cause i started with them and piled up plenty of spare shafts and parts over the years
 
If your choosing between a 10 bolt and a 44 with the flat top knuckles you would want to go with the 44 or at least swap the knuckles, but what do I know right, I'm just a noob.

Yeah that's a good point. I wasn't planning crossover and I figured if I was ever that motivated I'd wait until I had a D60 but it's definitely a concern if crossover is in your future.

but what do I know right, I'm just a noob.

It really plans on what he is planning on doing with it I guess. If its even worth breaking more 1/2 ton stuff, which I'm assuming why we is looking in to this, or going to a D60
 
they are pretty much the same strengthwise on the front end.good aftermarket parts for both to beef them up.10 bolts would probably be easier to find parts for at the junkyard.most of our yards crush everything older than 85 within a couple of months of being in the yard.
 
true..things pass quickly around here.:laugh:i have both a 10 bolt and a flat knuckle 44. i still want a 60.open or a limmited slip is cool. but everyone i know with a locked 44 breaks shat.
