What is the purpose of the resistor in the 10si alternator. I have two 10si alternators opened. I find one has the resistor and the other on does not have the resistor.

Just a guess, but the alt needs to see some sort of resistance to excite it. The bulb/gauge usually provides that resistance but if it burns out then that resistor excites it. I could be wrong though, wouldn’t be the first time.

Should I include the resistor or keep it removed in the alternator rebuild?

I have two alternators:
1. Bad bearings; electronics are ok, no resistor
2. Good bearings, some thing is wrong electronically , with resistor

I would like to swamp the electronics from #1 to #2 alternator.

The internal resister makes sure the idiot light works if the brushes are gone in the alternator. You probably aren't using an idiot light, and if you are making a 1 wire, leave it out.

No idiot light. The K5 came with a voltmeter.

I'm going with the stock 3 wire 10si setup. Should I include the resistor? The alternator has about 30K miles on it with no resistor.
