Hard downshift from 3rd to 2nd on steep grade, towing 2 4-wheelers on a 15x7 utility trailer.:doah:

no reverse, stuck in first, after pulling over.

damn 3.08's and 33's

time for some 4.10's, a new 700R4 (any recommendations?)

BTW trans temp never went over 200F.

Every tranny guy I have talked to says the stock 700r4 and 4l60e are only good for about 160,000 miles MAX. So you didnt do too bad I guess.

I recomend you do every upgrade you can for a 700r4. I had mine rebuilt and installed for $1800 and some change. Its built with all the corvette upgrades. It was upgraded from 3 gear planetary to a 5 gear planetary. It then has extra clutches in 1-2 and 2-3 a kevlar band. To top it off it has a B&M RV/towing shift kit.

Now there is something to consiter. An auto that shifts soft and smooth actually slips to achieve that comfort. The harder the shift the less slip, the less wear. But some people could be annoyed by the firm shifts. A few people hated the way my suburban shifted, it never bothered me so much. I requested a firm solid shift, and thats exactly what I got. After some time I learned to let off the throttle a bit JUST before it shifted to smooth it out. The con of the firm shift? I found out my trans will stay in first until about 65mph when you floor it and hold it there. Well when it did shift it shattered the spider gears in my 10B rear. So you gotta be careful! I have since sold the burb to my brother, and even after warning him, he did the exact same thing.

EDIT: I had my 700r4 rebuilt locally, I told him I wanted the best 700r4 hes ever built. When it was all said and done he personally gaurenteed it would hold up to around 800HP. How true that is I dont know but I was/am happy with the results. My brother now has a 385hp 350 in the burb and the weak link is still the 10B rear.

Sweet, a NoVA guy. I'm over here in Sterling.

Nothing like a nonsensical, unrelated post thrown in the mix, huh!!??! haha:D

Sounds like a busted sunshell to me!

I'd just get it overhauled and have a beefier aftermarket sunshell installed. I personally got rid of the 700r4 and went with a 5 speed standard instead.

I definately feel lucky, and I am convinced that the Amsoil synthetic ATF that has been in it for 30,000 miles, is why it is still shifting good

im sure the 4.10s keep it happy too, just dont make it downshift or it might explode and ull flip in a very slow mo through a fireball.

LOL - but, I downshift it all the time :doah: My wife puts MOST of the miles on it, probably another reason for it's long life

girls always seem to treat drivetrains like its the last one made, but treat bodies and bumpers like they're made out of rubber:wink1:

x2. That was the first thing I thought of when he described how it happened and the results. :doah:

i got 215,xxx out of my 700, was out driving around one day, and it just wouldn't shift out of 2nd. From a dead stop, it would take off, rev pretty high, then hit 2nd and that was it, nothing else, no warning, no odd noises, and it had done this several days previous, but started working again...

I don't abuse mine, don't drive it like it's a sports car, and i'm sure the regular fluid changes and the oversized cooler in the front helped out as well.

truck is currently sittin at about 255k now, and unfortunately the original motor had to be replaced several months ago, but not from blowing up, only from a headgasket leak, but i decided to pull it and do a complete rebuild instead of patching a very high mileage motor.

this Chevy is just almost like a woman, high maintenance, costly, but will always be sittin there the next morning for me. :D

ive murdered two now. The one going into my K10 is a BTO Level 2 the one in my C10 now is one I got from Stomper which supposedly was a 5,000 mile tranny. It shifts good and hard and the price was real good.
