has anyone used one before? in an automotive application? I need about 10 amps or so to run some large 24volt LED lights. I'm not going to rewire for a hybrid system on my truck, and I know the lights come in 12v...... but its not what I got. so If i can find a decent step up transformer to feed 24volt at 10 amps or less to the lights. I'll be golden :popcorn:
 
Just remember step down you double you amperage, step up you halve it. Make sure the wire is of sufficient size.
 
A transformer will not work on DC. But that stepup device that Russel linked to will.
It converts the DC to AC, steps it up through a transformer and then converts it back to DC.

Not sure how clean the output is, but it should work for lights just fine.

But, are you sure you need the 24? A lot of the LED light bars will work on both 12 or 24.
Double check the specs.
 
When my brother put a diesel engine in his Toyota skid-steer from a forklift,it was almost identical except the forklift engine was set up for 24V,and though he was able to swap all the other electrical parts off the original 12V engine onto it like the altenator,etc,he couldn't use the fuel shut off valve on the other engine,it had a different injector pump and intake setup,and no one knew of a 12V version to use..

He thought about getting a 12 to 24V inverter,but they were very expensive...to get around this problem he simply added another small 12V tractor battery to it,and wired it in series so he could tap 24V off the positive post of the tractor battery to run ONLY to the fuel shutoff solenoid..it works ok but he has to remember to charge the battery up once in awhile..I'm sure a fix for that could be worked around though by someone with some electrical know how..(like isolating the second battery from the rest of the tractor to allow it to be charged by the same altenator maybe?)..

All over ebay in varying designs...this would be nice IF the output is constant at 24V. For the price somewhat hard to go wrong. I've tried the adjustable output ones, but fluctuation in input voltage=fluctuation in output. Since the voltage within the vehicle system is rarely consistent, that may or may not be a factor with LED's. It doesn't take much voltage change to dim them considerably.
 
He needs 10 amps at 24 volts, so that is 240 watts.

Those modules will not work.

However, I would be tempted to buy one and hook it up backwards to see what happens due to this warning:

5: Cannot reverse polarity , or it will be short circuit, or will be born easily !

 
For 25 or 30 bucks each I'd be tempted to buy one per light to keep the amperage demand down to around 5a maybe keep them cooler maybe last longer. Thanks for the links guys.
 
Gotta look at the cost of buying one big honker to power all of them vs buying multiple smaller ones... I do like the reliability factor of having multiple units though!
 
I think running a couple of them at half capacity would be smarter. I can run 2 8x9s on one and 3 5x7s on another. Then when I command "Let there be light" on highway 63 it will be the night sun before me........
