Wondering if any or how much up and down axel play is acceptable. Rear 12 bolt axel. Had the axel up on stands and put a bar under the tire and there's a click when pushed up. Is this a bearing that needs to be replaced? Or is some play acceptable.

Chances are that you may have a wheel bearing dying on you - the bad news is that on a 12B the axle itself is the inner race to that wheel bearing - this means you will most likely need to replace both parts.

Check the other side while you’re at it and change the diff oil and clean the tubes well because of contamination from the bad bearing.

I did change the dif oil when I first got the truck and the axel seals. Hind sight I should of just done the bearings then but didn't have them. When I pulled the axels out they didn't have any groves in them. Hopefully catching it early enough. It's very little play just enough that u can hear a click.

What's The best way to clean the axel tubes out. I think bearing material might be the least of my worries as this truck has seemed to of been sitting a long time. There's definitely debris in there.

It’s a whole lot easier if the diff is removed but not entirely necessary.
Get plenty of break cleaner ( the kind that’s bad for the environment ) or you can use some good ole gasoline and soak a few rags and use a long rod or wooden rod to work them in and out of the tubes.
Sometimes it helps to have a few crooked nails in the wooden rod to take hold of the rags.

Be cautious with the axle inspection - post some good pics of the bearing area and we will tell you if it will pass muster or not.
If you can feel any form of difference with your finger nails then it’s game over but they can still be questionable before that point.

Don’t forget to clean the chunk out very well while your cleaning the tubes - same oil lubes both areas so contamination is likely and that’s bad news for all the bearings involved.

I got the bearings and seals ordered so when I tear into it I'll post the pictures. The condition the rear end is in i don't expect miracles. it'll all have to be changed out at somepoint. The ring got some pitting on it and so did one axle. But I'd like to prolong it as long as I can.

This will be the 3 gear oil change in as many months so it's getting a good flushing lol

Noticed the cross pin is hanging out more on one side than normal.
Yeah i was taking it out to change the axle seals and I thought to take a picture. That's all the way in and bolted in when I put it back
