is a 12 bolt axle better than a 10 bolt a guy has one for sell with a locker in it with 4 10 gear ratio for 250. im running 33 inche tires trying to keep my new tires and rims but i need the 4 10 gear ratio been looking for the six lug 14 bolt no luck so far, then i saw this for sell six lug 12 bolt with locker for 250. is it worth it or should i keep looking for the 14 bolt six lug he says it a dana 44 i have the axle chart but it seem to me the dana only come in ten bolt or is it that no matter how many bolts just the bolt pattern tells what unit you have like the gm,s seem be almost a perfect circle and the dana seem to have a disfigured circle so what i saying is can you have a dana 12 bolt diff

10 bolts, 12 bolts and 14 bolts were made by GM.

As for strength, there is a marginal difference between the 10 bolt and 12 bolt. The 12 bolt will have slightly larger shafts (30 spline) than the 10 bolt if its pre '89 (10 bolts were 28 spline up until '88, then they switched to 30 spline). The ring and pinion is bigger on the 12 bolt, but they have tiny, failure prone pinion bearings.

Which locker would this have? If its the factory gov lok, that rear diff is worth nowhere near $250.

GM never used a dana 44 rear.

Try again, the 1st gen trucks some came with a rear D44.

To the OP if you aren't having any luck finding a 6 lug 14sf axle and this 12 bolt has the gears you're wanting and if it's in good working order 250.00 is a decent price regardless of what locker is in it. To regear your current axle would cost you about 250.00 in parts alone.

Looks like you're right. Though its still really old, coarse spline stuff.

Its pretty easy to find a 10/12/14 bolt with 6 lugs with 4.10's for quite a bit less than $250.

If it has a real locker in it, its worth the $250. If it has the gov-lok, IMO, its not.

My .02 of course ;)

Yep around here you can find any axle you want, however i've discovered that some of the people on here live in areas where axles are hard to come by. They either live in the sticks and would have to drive a good distance to look for an axle or there just plain aren't any axles around them.

I agree. I'm trying to sell a 12 bolt, I can't give that thing away. Had all new bearings, gears (4.88), mini spool, and brakes put in. I'm only asking $75, and I keep getting low ball offer like $30. I guess thats what I get for using craigslist.

go with the 12 bolt

if your only runing 33's you arent going to need anything to much stronger, i have seen 12 bolts runnin 37's with no problems as long as you dont have 400+ hp. thats the only time i've seen them break.

Really? How far are you from central OH?

I'm in Auburn, it's near Bay City, Midland and Saginaw...right in the center of the triangle. If you're interested in the axle, shoot me a PM or E-mail. I may even come down in price for a CK5 member.
