The rear pinyon seal is leaking on my 12 bolt axle. As a result I need to tackle it. Now I know it is a crush sleeve type... My larger concern is a sligh amount of play in the rear yoke. I can wiggle the yoke, but it does appear to moving separate of the pinyon nut????

Is it possible that the yoke is stretched and allowing movement with out causing movement in the pinyon? I am hoping so cause other movement would mean much more extensive repair work.

What do you think? the movement is pretty small like a 1/8 inch max, but I am sure it is too much.

For a pinion, 1/8" is a ton. A couple thousandths is bad.

Truck 12 bolts have tiny, failure prone pinion bearings, so I'd bet heavily on those needing replacement.

I am afraid of that. Got a good link on a how to? I know it is a crush sleeve, but not really sure how that all works...

I had the rear yoke on a 12 bolt axle in my '72 K-5 strip out the splines one day, when I was showing off by putting it in 4-lo (and not locking in the hubs) and doing some burnouts...ya,that really made me look cool!..:doah:I heard a loud grinding noise, then the truck refused to move...I thought at fisrt I had finished off the splined coupling between the SM-465 and the NP-205 ,as it had been rattling for months,...............................................................................................but after having it towed to a shop,I was informed they drove it around the parking lot after locking the front hubs in---so I paid the tow charges and drove it home in 4WD,and replaced the yoke myself..luckily the pinion shaft didn't suffer any damage,I just had to rake all the metal from the yoke out from the splines and replace it--the pinion bearings seemed OK,so I didn't touch them...I had replaced the u-joints after hearing some noises at highway speeds, but evidently it was the yoke with its worn splines causing the weird noises & vibes...moral is dont use 4-lo unless you lock the hubs in I guess!...and yeah, yokes can wear at the splines or "stretch" I guess...

Any play on a piece that needs to be well adjusted is bad...take the yoke out replace the bearing, seal and crush sleeve and tighted again...

Again I double checked today, i think the yoke is moving independent of the pinyon. I will take it apart soon and know for sure.
