This whole thing has disaster written across it, please flog your friend about the face and neck then sell me the 44's unless they are a Ground Hawg's you can throw them in the river.
Put down the crack pipe !!!! Ground Hawg's are great mud tires.

I am thinking of getting hogs just so I don't ware out a set of 44" tires so fast...I can't affoard TSL's again...I only got 3 years out of this set :(

I figure with some grooving and siping they would probubly be a good all around tire.

yes it will overwork the tranny and heat it up and that is bad. he should be running 5:13 gears with those tires.

that was cold, unfeeling, disrespectful and rude.......

judge not.....lest ye be judged!

there is a guy here trying to sell his rusted out blazer w/454/350/10b/44 tsl its sitting in a lot outside of town, the rear yoke is twisted so bad you can kick the d-shaft and the ujoint falls out, i called him and he wants $9500 because and i quote "that the best truck you can build" and "It doesnt matter what axle you have, theyre all the same".....
Anybody want his number?? :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

He should just do an axle swap, then a gear change, then an engine change. Or I guess get some smaller tires.

I can get my 42s loose (same size as the 44" hawgs) with 4.10s, but i have a stick, and a nice engine.

Wow. You asked a question and the first page of posts dont contain a real answer. The answer to your question is this: You are right. 4.10 gears with 44 inch tires and a 700r4 dont mix well at all. That tranny loves low gears (numerically higher). Im running 37's with a 700r4 with 4.56 gears. It seems to be right where I want it. 4.88 or 5.13's would be nicer but I dont have the cash. The tranny with oversized tires also needs an external transmission cooler. 10 bolt axles will NOT hold up to 44's for very long either. 44's plus 10 bolts will break driving down the road which is very dangerous as your wheel falls off when this happens. A 305 and 44's is bad news. IMHO the 305 is not a good truck motor at all. It works well enough in a car, but not for a truck, especially one with 44's. Tell your friend he is an idiot, and laugh when he not only breaks his 10 bolts, but also when his tranny fries and the wimpy 305 blows.

I'm sure 44's with this setup is a bad idea, But last months issue of Petersons offroad featured a big red blazer on 44's with 4.10's on the front page. Just wanted to throw that out there.

I had a 91 blazer running 12" of lift with 44" boggers. I also had a 454 and one ton axles with 4.56 gears. That was not enough gear for a mild BBC. I also did not run CV driveshafts in it. That was a big mistake and I went through rebuilding the TH400 about 4 times. The vibrations killed the tranny. Now on my burb I have the HAD shafts & with the longer wheelbase I don't have the vibration problem. I also went with 5.13's. I wish I ad gone with a dana 70 rear because I would be running 6.17 gears for the 44's

Rootbreaker...you may change my attitude about hawgs. Sweet rig and cool wheeling pics!

You can actually speak from experience, I am glad someone can.

well it happened .the rear axle broke 2 day, and i was be hind him in my blazer, and there was 80-90 all over the road .and now listen to this he gutted the rear and put a new cover on it ,and now he is driving it around on the front axle .....front wheel drive k5 i cant stop laughing,, i feel bad for that truck

Only draw back with the Ground Hawgs is they arn't the best on the rocks. But if you're mostly into mud, trails, and street, Hawg's will work fine for you.

How does he keep the tires on the 10 bolt rear end? Usually when the axle breaks the tires will come out because the c-clip holds the axle in.

i was looking at it and one of the spider gears broke .and it pushed thru the diff cover .so he took all of the spider gears out and all of the broke pieces .and it roles so i think that answers your question

the ring and pinion are still in there they just dont do anything.....so what do you think will break first the t.f.case or the front diff?????????

(u kno like premuture cluch ware)
um im pretty sure there isnt a clutch in any 700r4 ive seen. maybe clutch packs/disks, but not a clutch. and spelling is crucial

omg... 10 bolt rear end and 44s. WOW. I forsee atleast one of his rear tires venturing down "its own path" in the near future. His 700R4 will probably follow. The 700 will work on an offroad rig, but you need to be smart about it... lots of gear, lots of cooling etc. Not sure what more you can tell the guy... you already gave him the "straight" scoop. Maybe you should have him check out this thread?

why is your friend so dumb? that's the real question. how does he know about differential mechanics but not gearing? why won't he listen to you? (dumb)

1. show him this webpage
2. tell him to get the axles out of a 1 ton 4wd drive truck with straight axles.
3. install 5.13 ratio gears in the 1 ton axles.
4. install a transmission cooler on the transmission
5. (optional) install larger engine. (350, 454)

this is all you need to do, and the problem will be fixed.
