i picked up a 14bff from a 76 k20 suburban it originally had 4.10 gears but i bought a used set of 4.56 from a place called ring & pinion locally. i decided to get the crush sleeve and pinion rebuilt from six states. all bearings and races are brand new.

after installing everything following pirates write up i tried setting zero backlash by
Loosening the right-side adjusting nut and tighten the left-side adjusting nut until the ring gear contacts the pinion without binding but i cant ever get to that. no matter how much i tighten the left side it never gets to were i think it should be

could this mean my ring and pinion are to worn and no good?

I've never done one, but aren't there shims on the pinon and carrier that should easily push the two into each other?

lol, you posted in the future. It's only 6:57pm

havent ever thought of that before lol

How are you setting your pinion depth?

Rene

im using the shims that came with the axle just to set backlash then get my final pinion depth and backlash after. and just out of curiosity i took all shims out and it didnt make a difference

pinion shim sets depth. and always reuse the old one first for the axle you are building.

then set backlass with adjusters.

and did you get the 4.56 carrier with the gears ?

14ff has 2 carriers. 4.10 -3.73-3.42 and then 4.56-4.88-5.13-5.38.

unless you got thick 4.56 gears to fit 4.10 down carrier then this could be a huge problem also.

good carrier id info here. http://coloradok5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=151608

i should have known :doah: i have read several times about the split but didnt ring any bells untill you said something. and this must be what it is, thanks for clearing this up for me. glad i didnt completely waste my money.

looks like im in the market for the 4.56 and up carrier :doah: any takers?? i will trade for 4.10 gears and carrier in good shape lol

whichever is cheaper dude
selling the gears and buying new ones
or selling your carrier for the bigger one

check ebay

The factory carriers for 4.56 and lower gears are pretty rare because there weren't a ton of them made and those that were generally stay with the axle. I'm sure they're available in the aftermarket, I can check tomorrow if you're interested.

Just about all 14 bolt gears are thick gears because basically all of them have 3.73's or 4.10's and if anyone wants to change gearing on them they will go to 4.56/4.88/5.13/5.38.

If you really have 4.56 gears that are meant for a 4.56 and up carrier, you have the wrong gears as mentioned. The split is between 4.10's and 4.56.

I would imagine you have a set of stock 4.56 gears. Take a pic of any of the markings on the ring gear and I should be able to tell you if they are stock or not, well factory or not

that would be awesome.

i was checking out the pictures on the different carriers and noticed that they only measure the one side, would this mean i would only need that one side and i can use my other side of my carrier?

looks like i will be hittin up some junk yards.

Nope, carriers are matched halves. I bought a brand new 4.56-up carrier from 4WPW when I geared my axles and it was only like $125.00 new.

that looks like a gov bomb but if im wrong, i will be all over that like a fatboy on a cupcake.

plus does a detroit fit in both carriers? im guessing so. and maybe it would be cheaper to sell the gears and buy new used ones. i bought them for 150

did you NOT read the first link i posted to the full 14ff carrier i.d. guide with pics ?

and i wouldnt link you to a gov loc unless you wanted that.

and open carrier holds spiders or detroit or luchbox locker or mini spools. it dont matter if 4.10 - down or 4.56 - up.

we got ya buddy . :waytogo:

and fyi the price of the 2 new carrier bearings and races on that thing alone will be basicly 1/2 the price thay want. thats cheep with the shipping price also.
