14 bff mini spool issue

damn! 8k each! thats nuts man!

what lockers came with those things?

i mean theres no way those things are as strong as a stock rockwell! why would anybody pay that much?

well i guess if i was wealthy individual who wanted the "best" of everything and the cost wasnt an issue, why not?

some of these buggies i see on the trail in the south east are good examples, 80k to build em! yikes! maybe they will buy a mini spool! LOL
A couple years ago, my buddy got some dynatrac 60's ----$6000 for the front end. It had an ARB, CTM shafts and joints, 456 gears.......and some other bling

Yep, the $15k D60's I mentioned are the Dynatrac Pro-rock, or whatever they call them...the high clearance ones, with all of the bling 35-spline chromo shafts and stuff, but with only spools (probably the cheapest option, though he didn't choose spools because of the price).

This guy has somewhere around $35k (in less then a year) in a Jeep YJ Wrangler and most of that cost is from the Dynatrac axles, 4-speed Atlas (10:1 low-low that isn't even practical for any trail use), and a new or rebuilt NV4500 from shop that advertises in magazines. No bumpers, no winch, no rollcage beef, no real body armor, stock 4.0L engine, "only" 37's, very stiff leaf springs he had custom made by a shop (still has broke the rear driveshaft because of wheel hop, but won't put on a traction bar), and won't spend $250 for hydro-assist even though it turns like crap with the stock steering and front spool......and no tow rig or trailer so he puts on a set of stock take-off Chevy 3/4 ton truck wheels to drive to the trails with a little trailer with his bead-locked Boggers loaded on it.

Don't get me wrong, he's a super nice guy and fun to go wheeling with. Again, it's his money so he can do whatever he wants with it. He asked for mine and others opinions but opted to the $$ stuff.....but I can't even imagine dropping that kind of coin in a short period of time on a toy.

Posted on here before debating on what to put in rear end and I opted for the Polyperformance mini spool. First trip out after about a half a day a wheelin rear end started clankin and slippin, I thought for sure I didnt trash a ring gear or pinion, so limped it back to camp. Got into rear end and the "spider bolts" in the mini spool had all slipped out, The way the carrier is with the troughs for the bolts to fit in allowed them to slide all the way out but not fall into the housing. All four bolts came out, out on trail if I would roll backward one of the bolts would slip back into spool housing and lock me back up so I could go. I guess the bolts are just pressed into housing. You cant really "trail" weld the bolts back into the spool because of the way the 14B carrier fits together around it. So ended up welding my spider gears up (luckily I brought em with me) and kept on truckin.
Not saying anything is wrong with Polyperformance, I contacted them and sent them pics and Dave with consumer service said he wll take care of me. what that means I am not sure yet. I know there are some one piece mini spools out there but just giving you a heads up on this brand.

Interesting post. I went the other route, started with a Detroit- broke a shaft, taking out the Detroit. Welded the original spiders, broke another shaft- no harm. Broke a 3rd shaft, sheared off one of the cross pins of the welded orb, fell into the case, and dented the 1/4" cover, but thankfully didn't take out the ring gear.

Since I'm fresh out of 14B center parts:doah:, I ordered up a Ouverson mini spool, we'll see how it holds up. I did not want to buy a Yukon. The one OEM sells should work well with the CTMs that are on the way.

you should be happy with the ouverson. i loved mine, tough as nails and a warranty second to none.

I have to agree with others.I don't see wasting your money on a spool in a 14bolt FF.Just weld the spiders up.If your breaking the welded spiders, your not welding it enough. My Orbs usually end up weighing about 10lbs afterwards.
