Just got done swapping in my 3/4 ton axles on my 87 Jimmy, and I cannot figure out how to hook up the parking brake. The "new" axle cables are to short (both are about 2 ft long). Now the parking brake light stays on. Do I need to swap cables from one to the other?

* "new" axle is out of 1975 K20

Thanks
Bryon

You may be able to swap them. I just did the swap but my rear was from a LWB 85 and the cables were perfect. For the price you cant go wrong getting new cables. Just measure what you need and give you local parts store a hollar. I had to buy longer cables for my 10b and IIRC they were only 10-15$. The E-brake light may be on due to not a full bleed job of the brakes. Most likely there is a little button on the proportioning valve that needs to be depressed during bleeding.

As long as the cable enters the backing plate on the axle the same way then you just swap your old cables onto the new axle and you're done. There were some older axles that used a bolt on cable though and that one will be tougher to figure out. The brake light is on either because the e-brake pedal is slightly depressed or there is an issue with the brakes and the prop valve is making the light come on.

IM just saying if it was me and i was gonna go through the hassle of changing the cables id get new ones. New design doesn't have the coils wrapped around the housing and are a little more rigid. Plus the cables from your 10bolt are 23 years old and old cables like to get sticky in their housing. Just my .02

Well I tried to re-bleed the brakes tonight. Had good pressure in the rear. I did notice that the right front had a leak. Tightend it up, and still the light is on. I tried to push the reset button on the PV, but it was in.

Could any of this be caused by my rear brakes being the big 13" brakes on the original MC and PV?

The backing plates are different. So I cannot just change the cables to hook up the parking brakes. I will have to try to figure that out later.

Scott the parking break pedal is all the way up. Actually the pedal is up tight and I cannot push it down. Any thoughts?

Thanks for the replies.

Take it in to a shop and have it pressure bled and be done with it. Best $35 I ever spent after messing with it for hours.

Well looked at the brakes again this morning. I pulled the lid off the brake booster and the diaphragm fell into the reservoir. Re-bleed, pumped the brakes and the light went off.

Thanks for all your help,
Bryon
