How many quarts of gear oil goes in a 14 bolt? Is there a specific company's gear oil that is better than someone else's?

I was told just under a gallon with an aftermarket diff cover. Remember it fills the axletubes too to lubricate the shaft. I plan on using just standard 90 weight. I think that is what I have a few gallons of.

and if its Gov-loc...u should run some kind of limited slip additive ( I believe /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif)

According to Eatons web site the Gov loc does not need an additive. The gear oil I buy is usually limited slip posi friendly though.....can't hurt. Oh yea the 14ff takes an A$$ load of gear oil. I actually put just over a gallon in mine /forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif

Nothing but gear oil required. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

The only time an additive is required is if there are clutches involved.

Gov-locs dont have clutches??

I was just making a remark as to when an additive or special gear oil is needed.

Gov locs do have clutches, and whether or not they require additive is a matter of debate. I personally don't put anything in them and I've never noticed any chatter.

im just making sure that not running special additive's in my gov-loc wont hurt it /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

It will, unless the worn out. As stated before if it has clutches, it needs posi additive.

The Gov-lock clutches aren't used like regular limited slip clutches. Remember, the Gov-lock is a locker. It is supposed to be full open or full locked. The clutches only see slip in the instant the thing is locking or unlocking.

In a POS (gov loc) differential... It operates as follows:
clutch packs are engaged all the time just like a limited slip, except weaked than most other limited slips. When the speed of one wheel exceeds the speed of the other by a set (way too many) number of RPMs, the stupid little weights and widgits and such cause it to lock up solid...like a spool. When the load comes off it, it goes back to limited slip operation. It should have additive in it....well actually, if you take my not so humble opinion, it should have a detroit in it.
