I added oil to the rear end until it started coming out of the fill hole. Today I went about 25 miles and oil started leaking from the vent fitting laying on the top of the gas tank.

Rear oil all over the top of the tank and dripping on the ground.

Did I put to much oil in the rear?

IF the truck wasn't on level ground,or you didn't wait long enough to let the excess lube run out (which is often the case since the last thing we want is gear lube on the pavement or concrete !),it is possible it might have too much lube in it..

I usually just check the level with my finger with the diff cold,if its within a 1/2" or so of the filler hole I call it good--leaves a little room for expansion when it heats up..so far I have not had too many wheel bearing or diff problems in all the vehicles I've had (RWD ones)..

As the centerline of the pinion angle changes due to lift kits etc, the stock fill/level hole changes too.
This can cause overfilling, which will cause the lube to froth and foam and can be pushed up the vent line.

as Bob stated above, if it's within 1/2" of the fill plug..call it good.

think about it, if the angle is changed enough to raise the level above the axle tubes, the lube will start to flood the axle tubes. now the axles are constantly spinning in the lube, there is no room for lube to run off to in the pumpkin, the gears are whipping the lube into a foam, it has to relieve all that pressure some how... overfilling can also cause seals to leak or be blown out especially if the vent is clogged up.

You have too much fluid, mine does this and it likes fuid level a 1/2 inch lower then the fill hole.

Is the pinion bearing still getting sufficient lubrication with the pinion at an angle?

Thank you all for your help.
