Still encountering a leak from one of the axle flanges. I used a gasket instead of rtv, but my real concern is the hardware I used. The OEM bolts were rounded off so I replaced them with grade 8 bolts and split washers.
RTV should work fine but maybe try getting some of the gaskets that came on it. Get some flangel bolts from you local heavy duty truck parts store if you think the ones you have aren't cutting it. I don't see any reason the bolts you're using would cause a leak though.
Pulled the axle out, apparently some one picked up the wrong hammer at some point and left a few indentations so the steel gasket couldn't make a tight seal. A little Rtv and she seems good to go
I've always used just rtv. I'm guessing the stock bolts have little give to them that may lock it in tighter. I thought about using the stock gaskets but never had a problem with silicon.
