14 bolt axle swapology info needed

idk if its a direct bolt on but i have an 85 m1009 k5 blazer and it has the corporate 14 bolt rear axle with a gov lock which is standard with the military trucks down side is the 3:11 gears

Granted at full load I will be at 1000lbs or a bit more so just driving down the road is fine but when I start on old looging roads or mine roads North of the arctic circle i dont want to take a chance of bending tubes or snapping shafts. Every time that rear end bounces it applies more then its dead weight.

As for a locker I am installing ARBs front and rear.

I will contact Ruffstuff and see if they have brackets for a 14SF for the calipers.

I am going to see what I can find in the way of shafts with different stud holes.

It's very frustrating that the info isn't easily found out there. I'm pretty sure an '88 C/K light 3/4 had the 9.5". I *really* think the weight rating I found (2000) is less than what they have been rated at in the past.

But I don't disagree with you...at 2000lbs, traveling where you plan to go, you want a comfortable margin of error. I just can't find concrete specs that say othewise. I know they exist, because they used that axle in the 3/4 tons for some time.

That's why I am thinking a SF will do fine for my purpose. I think I will check into seeing about changing over to 1/2-20 studs since going from 14mm to 7/16 is a bit too much. That's not bad for 24 studs and 24 lug nuts.

The axle from a M1009 is a direct bolt in to any other Blazer, but GM Never put a 14 bolt axle in ANY Blazer. Military or not. The gears in the Blazers are 3.08:1.

The CUCV pickups did come with 14 bolt full floaters. They are not a direct bolt in for a Blazer though. The spring perches are too narrow. They did come equipped with a locker, but it is not a Gov-lock, it is a Detroit Locker. All of the 14 bolts in the military pickups are 4.56:1 geared.

Don't know if you've seen it already, but there is a thread I jumped into where I found the "right" studs to do the 1/2" conversion.

If the axles will spin freely, and if you can spin one axleshaft hard enough/fast enough the other will lock in and spin the same direction.

Other than that, nope. Turning one axleshaft slowly it will act like an open diff, unless its broken and stuck engaged.

Unless you know when the last time the axle grease was changed, checking the rear end for type of differential and gear ratio is a good excuse to change it.

Take a look at Dorman 610-379 1/2-20 studs, .620 knurl a tight fit but will go in. For the 14SF axle. ( dormanproducts.com )

So I have scored a 14 bolt ff with 4.56s Its a 77 SRW 3/4ton. 67 track width, perches and shock mounts all match up.

I have a chance to score another 14bff for 150 thats really clean. It has the smaller brakes. Can I just swap the drum brakes and use the bigger 13"s i got on my other 14 bolt.

Are the 4 hole mounts the same?
