broke pieces

thats actually common on high mileage 14 bolts. its that one thing everyone overlooks servicing the differentals on a regular schedual

Are you saying you didn't notice this 'little' problem when driving it? Didn't it kinda feel wrong when wheelin'?

Also a question for Virgilh, when servicing a 14 bolt do you normally take the carrier out?

galling/overheating

From the bluing on the cross it looks like it ran low on fluid or one wheel slipped for a prolonged period of time.

I actually never drove this axle i pulled the carrier out of a extra 14 bolt so i could have an open one to put into my truck with the detriot

no but regular oil changes (servicing) will keep this from happening being a differental guy i change my diff fluids after 7500 miles or bi weekly when im taking the boat out. that is caused by lack of proper lube on them and when you park the spider gear sticks to the crossshaft when you take off again it gulls the cross shaft untill it finally breaks the shaft, you wouldnt feel it when your driving because you have 2 other spider gears hold it in place when those fail you will feel it

I only see 1 broken off both pics are of the same one. Either way it would not cause any different "feel" since most gm diffs only have 2 spiders. As long as the piece of the pin stayed out of the gears you would never know.
