Just got a detroit for my 14b FF axle. Also got an open carrier to replace my gov-lock. I've been reading through a few posts and write-ups on locker install and see a few mentioning marking the carrier halves to ensure it goes together the same as it came apart. When i got my carrier it was already apart so i have no idea how it originally mated together. so heres my question...........

Does it matter how the carrier mates back together when it goes back into the housing or am i creating a big problem if i just bolt it together without ensuring its together "properly"?????

thanks

I didn't mark mine when I put in my Detroit. No problems yet. :dunno:

There are only 4 ways it can go together, so you have a 25% chance. :D

If I remember right, mine had 2 arrows in the cast that you would line up. I could be wrong about why they are there but thats what is looked like to me.

Yep, the case halves are marked from the factory with arrows and also IIRC there are 2 countersunk screws that hold the halves together before you bolt the ring gear on and the position of those countersunk holes will only allow the case halves to go together 1 way.

Hmm, now I'm gonna go back and check my carrier. I put it together over a year ago, so I may just have forgotten about the arrows.

I didn't have any screws holding my 2 halves together, but each half did have the arrow cast into it, and they were lined up together.

My 14ff open carrier has 2 countersunk screws to hold the case halves together.

Non OEM alteration perhaps????

My diff was an open also, but as stated, no screws, just the ring gear bolts.
