Hi all, before I ask my question I'd just like to say how pleased I am with the information and seriousness of CK5. As I dig deeper into my blazer, I'm finding the idea of a membership more and more worth it. For now I only have one question, cause I don't have all my other questions in order.

I have a 14bff with the smaller carrier, 3.73 currently. I have the need for a larger carrier, 4.56s are planned and purchased. While at the junkyards I see lots of 14bff, just haven't opened one up yet, nor have I opened my own.

*How can I tell a larger carrier from a smaller one once I pop the cover, having never seen either in person before?

I have no idea, but I got my first K5 6 months ago, and the membership is worth every penny and more! :D Welcome to the club and welcome to CK5!

You tell by the gear ratio. The only differences in the carrier is the ring gear mount spacing on the carrrier. I guess you could measure it although I dont know what the spacing actually is.

I'm pretty much doing the same thing. I'm trying to find a carrier and pinion assembly from a CUCV with 4.56's and a Detroit. But, if you are already planning on a full ring&pinion install, I would just get a "Thick Ring" & Pinion 4.56 gears that fit on your current carrier. Then ebay the gears you have.

2X...that is exactly what I did. Original carrier is 3.73 ratio, so I purchased the Thick 4.56 R&P from PORC (great pricing & service).

pony up the 25 member fee.

i wrote and posted tons of pics in the tech section .

14ff id thread. all the goodys.

and you can get 4.56 for your current carrier. you just need thick gears to fit the 4.10 down carrier.

There ya go.
Money well spent, I can testify to that.

The carrier thickness is about 3/4" on a 4.56 and up, and about 3/8" on a 4.10 and down. I got one of each, and should have just used the thin carrier, as I had to buy new gears anyway.

thank you zimmer and to all those who recommend the think cut gears. For some reason, I felt that way was Mickey Mouse, like the easy way around having to use the larger carrier, weaker maybe. I get that way about buying things. I already bought the 4.56s for the larger carrier, I will attempt to find the carrier and hopefully not pay much. Otherwise I guess selling the gears and getting new ones will be the way to go. It just hurts losing money that way.

I'm only hesitant to purchase because I've belonged to so many forums before, dealing with quads etc, and every one of them have turned into a mess. Flashing ads, google crap, etc...even when people pay the voluntary membership dues. Seeing as I haven't signed up for any other blazer/chevy forum, other than this one, you should still be proud. I will end up paying, even if I don't post, just to show appreciation for the information and technical articles.

I guarantee the ads you see right now go away with membership, and in the 10 years I've been here the site owner has never gone to pop-ups or other quick buck schemes. In fact, even having "paid membership" required a lot of convincing from the people here to Steve, the site owner. We all felt we'd rather pay a small yearly sum and be able to keep this site.

At the time Steve had incurred a 5 figure personal debt just to keep this site going as a 'free' site. Clearly not acceptable, or sustainable.

The thick gears are not a cheesy way to do it just a good way to do it, I have installed several ring gear spacers on 60s haven't had a one problem with them. Even had a custom spacer made for a 61 that was almost twice as wide as a normal spacer, seems to work just fine.

Well with all this chatter about the 4.56 and up carrier I hope some of you guys are around when I switch to 5.38s cause those only come in thick for use with the 4.10 and down carrier. I have factory 4.56s

I was just about to mention the 14ff ARB has to use thick gears for 4.56 and lower.
