Quick question for the 14 bolt gurus,

Will the carrier from an early design 14bff fit into a second design 14bff housing. I ask this because I need 4.56 gears for my 1998 14bff, and I have a lead on some 4.56s with an open carrier out of a 1988 14bff. I know the design change occured between 88-89, but I also I have read that the interior design of the housing (bearings) changed between 84-85. Will an old stlye carrier work in a new style housing by using old style bearings? Or will you have to use newer stlye bearings? Or will they work at all?

Thanks for reading, and thanks in advance. :D

i have a gov bom from a 90s in my truck now and it also lived in a 78. no problems. all with same carrier bearings back and forth. only thing diffrent is basicly the 3rd bearing support for the pinion. went diffrent style bearing from old to new.

also try hear. http://coloradok5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=151608

Thanks for the info. Do you know which set of bearings I should order if I were going to put an older carrier in a newer axle? Was it the actual bearing size that changed, or simply the design?

Thanks
Al

like i said. the pinion support one changed. not the carrier as far as i know. i used bearings for the 78 on the late 90s unit and have had it in both axles no problems.
