well, i finally rebuilt my 14bolt with 5.13:1's, a detroit, did the wheel bearings and seals, and a diyx razorback diff cover. A buddy from work helped me with the rebuild and he has done numerous gear sets but has never installed a detroit locker. so after we set the backlash and checked it twice and checked the wear pattern, checked the rolling torque, torqued everything down to spec and installed one axelshaft and rotor he noticed that there is a slight amount of difference in (play) or backlash between when you turn the pinion and the amount of movement at the wheel. its like there is a lag in power transfer.... or is that just the 5.13's reduction playing with my head? when you look down the open axeltube and turn the pinion it seems like its just play in the locker. so if ive worded this correctly, what im looking for is how much play can you expect to have in a detroit? its just a drop in locker correct?
my backlash is set to 5 thou
rolling torque is 27 in lb
meshing pattern is centered and pimpin'

i have the Axel at work and can log on from there, im hoping i can get this solved and start on the d60 soon..

thanks in advance

Detroits, especially 14 bolt Detroits, have lots of play in them. That's totally normal and how they are designed.

I will third what everyone else is saying. I can get almost 1/4 turn of the pinion with my 14FF. There is a post on here talking about the "dynamic backlash" in the detroit. Totally normal.
