I just got a 14ff and was going over everything before I start to disassemble and realized it had 16" drums on it. I thought they looked massive. I was under the assumption that they had the same 13" drums my 10 bolt had. Were there different drums for these axles? I have new 15" rims and tires and am a little discouraged about this. Would hate to have to get a whole new tire and wheel combo and try to sell the ones I just bought. My other option would be to convert to disc but thats more time and money that Im running out of. Anyone got any ideas for me? Can I bolt on my 10 bolt drums:confused: didnt think so....just checking. I was hoping there was a another solution that Im not aware of. thanks
The axle looks good. It was a 1 ton converted to fit my 1/2 ton. Has 4.56's with a detroit and the push in style e-brake cables.

you are either reading your tape measure wrong, or possibly have a rear diff from a bigger truck,,,,13" brakes are the "bigger" ones for a 14bff.

you're 10 bolts should have something like 9" or 10" brakes, or something like that, don't remember right off...

well maybe i am measuring in the wrong spot. I was measuring the backing plate behind the drum. it was 13" on my 10 and 16" on the 14ff. is that the wrong place to measure?

inside actual drum surface, where the brake shoes make contact.

you CAN fit a 15" wheel over a 14bff 13" brake drum too :D

Close. The smaller 14FF drums are 11".

not even "close" i didn't mention anything about the "smaller 14bff drums"

i was talking about his original 10 bolts,,,i haven't had them in quite some time, so i haven't worked on them in quite some time, didn't remember the measurement right off,,,,

but thank's for trying:wink1:

There are two drum sizes for the 14. The "smaller" 11" drum and the larger 13" drum. I dont know what the size is for a 10b drum since I ditched mine a long time ago, but I do know that it is a lot smaller than a 14 drum. Regardless of if you have the small 11" drums or the big 13" drums, your 15" wheels will fit over them.

Actually, there are three drum sizes for the 14's.

11"
13" x 2.5" OR 2.75" (can't remember right off the bat)
13" x 3.5"

The 3.5" wide ones are a true 1 ton. The other two are 3/4 tons.

cool thanks for the replies. I guess i have the 13" ones. On my 10 bolt the back of the drum is still inside the wheel so i thought it would be the same for the 14ff. I forgot that the drums were 4" wider on the 14ff so the back half will be outside the wheel. Glad to here my rims will work. Once i get it in a better spot ill fit the rim on the axle to make sure before i mount it. Guess it was a last minute panic attack i had when i started looking at it without fully investigating. just trying to get all my ducks in a row before i tear it down again to eliminate all the surprises.

Hopefully your new rims are 8 lug otherwise they aren't going to fit.

No worries. They will fit just fine. Worry about making them fit the front instead.

I'm looking at a '75 or '76 3/4 ton 14-bff at the moment and I was told it has the smaller drums...11" by the sounds of it. Are there any benefits to running one size over the other? I just picked up a set of stock chevy 16x8 8-lug wheels, so clearance either way wouldn't be an issue.

no benifit with having the bigger brakes on a 1/2 ton. The 11" would actually be better so they dont hang out so much. I ended up converting to disc anyway.

Actually, the larger brakes will stop better. Also it doesn't matter if you have the 11" or the 13" brakes the axle width is the same.
