Okay first off i am far from an expert in this section so ya might have to use allot of description.
so today i pulled of the diff cover on my 14 bolt to install my new DIY flat back diff cover and guardsman. First problem/question. When i pulled off the diff cover i found this pin lookin thing and i can see where it might go by looking at the other side but the holes it goes in are not lined up to work any more. do i just loosen the two bolts holding the diff in to spin the ring and reinstall that pin err what?

second question/problem. Up on the pinion area where the guardsman will be bolted up i has always leaked. Is there a gasket that is supposed to be in between these two parts? Or should i just use some gasket maker?

Thanks for the help guys.

the part that was loose is what keeps the diff adjusters from changine postion, with that being out you would be best to check your backlash and pattern before you put it all back together.

Now for the pinnion you already have the bolts out, put the pinnion back in and the gaurd bolts on the outside of the pinnion support

No gasket on the pinion housing. It would effect your pinion depth. I have always used a spray tack type gasket glue. It is such a thin layer it does not effect the readings.

okay i went to the junk yard and pulled some new pins and bolts. I'm ganna just loosin the carrier a little bit and spin that ring so the holes line up.

well the other side hasnt moved obviously so I would just try and tighten that side and then replace the pin and bolt. That is really wierd that the bolt is not in there...how long have you been driving on the axle?

I've prolly put 10 miles on it maybe since i got it, but the fella before me put more on than that I'm sure. the bolt wasn't missing it was in a million pieces allover the inside the differential. but yeah i got err all bolted up and it looks nice! Thanks for all your help guys i'll post up some pics of the finished product tomorrow....after I shave the new cover to match the housing...:grind:

I bet I could get some 12" long bolts under there and use them to effectivly extend the area of coverage for the guardsman.:thinking::thinking::thinking:

:eek1::eek1: So the bolt got ground through the gears and bearings.........and it has been run with the incorrect carrier bearing preload on it (it would of loosened) for who knows how long, and you didn't bother to check that you readjusted it correctly.

Well, at least if it locks and grenades you will know why!

X2!:doah::eek1:
It doesn't seem like a good idea to me. Good Luck.

I didn’t mention it, but I did clean the hell out of the casing and re adjusted the bearing pre load, painted the ring and everything matched up. It should be alright.......

It *might* be alright, but its unlikely IMO. Grinding up a bolt will send a lot of metal through the diff (and it usually destroys the ring and pinion instantly).
