What tools do I need to dissasseble my 14BFF axle. I gotta switch over my disc brake set up from another axle. I was going to change the bearings and seals cause I think they are 23 years old (good idea or skip it?) I think I need the 6 pin hub socket but what else do I need to change the bearings and seals? What type of gear oil should I put back in it? Thanks guys!

If you are just doing the brakes, bearings, and seals then all you need is hand tools and a torque wrench to torque the spindle nut, and the socket you talked about.

If you are talking about taking the carrier out also you need an indicator to reset backlash and a spanner wrench or some other way to loosen the adjusters that adjust the carrier side to side. Plus other tools if you are taking it all apart.

Well I went and picked up the socket and some seals. I guess I'm am going to just clean and repack my bearings. Do you know the torque spec for the spindle nut?

50ft-lbs while turning the hub. Then back the nut off and retighten to 35ft-lbs, then back off 1/4 turn. After installing the lock then tighten the lock nut to 65ft-lbs.

For what you are doing you should have a manual or two. I have a Chilton and a Haynes manual. What isn't in one seems to be in the other.

don't pack the bearings, the gear oil is what lubricates them

this has all the info you'll need for the 14 bolt

spindle nut is 50 foot lbs

When I did mine I dumped as much gear oil on the bearings and in the hub as I could as I installed it. After the hub was on the spindle and tightened I dumped more gear oil in it, then installed the axle.

When both sides were done I jacked up one side of the axle and let the gear oil run down the tube to the opposite hub, it takes a few minutes, then did the same for the other side. Then let it down so it was level waited a few minutes for the excess oil to run back out of the hubs and rechecked the oil in the diff. Refill to proper level if necessary.
