would it be possible to grenade the bearings on a rear 14 bolt ff to the point of the hub falling off? I'm finding that a little hard to believe..

With drums brakes and bad bearings, the hub can come off, not with disc brakes because the caliper holds the rotor from pulling off. My buddy had his hub nut come loose and he lost the entire hub/drum/axle assembly while driving. It could happen.

that sounds like a case of plum forgot to put the snap retaining ring on. but not grenading bearings right?

it was a rear 60 (same bearings) on my friends dodge right after he bought it. Spindle nut came loose (go figure, it was a dodge).

If the bearings are that bad, the axle shaft would get weakened (could sheer at the flange side) and the spindle would get all fubar'd and you would need a new housing. My housing already sucks (spindle surface area) and i have to change my bearings and hub seal every now and again. No breakage though.
