So doing a gear install in my K5 in the driveway and couple questions on setting back lash. What is best way to tell backlash is at 0 since axle in the truck not on a stand where you can position it easy to work with.

I installed carrier and snugged caps down by hand installed the pinion then went to left side adjusting nut and turned till it stopped then backed off 2 holes. then went to right side and ran it in till made full contact with bearing loosened then retighten to full contact. Then turn 3 holes tighter since new bearings.

Just checking that I am on right track here even got billvista info (tons of info).
Also anyone got a pic where the like to place the gauge etc to check run out on the gear tooth?

Tips/tricks welcome as this is first 14 bolt ever done here and LEARNED a lot about it so far from previous owners mistakes and my own.

Thanks Brandon

I put it on the outside edge of the tooth.

Pretty much anywhere its convenient.

Ok so sounds like I am on right track here.

If lash is off just use the adjusting nuts to get it correct. Think was talked about in my book I made from Billvista.

image.jpg Got backlash set to .006 and put compound on now looks like I need to go thinner on pinion shim.

Thoughts???

Reread need to add shim to pinion to move pinion from ring gear center line.

And move the ring gear away a tad to maintain the lash
