i know everyones probably going to rip me apart for this one but i couldnt resist. I was flipping through the pages of "off road" magazine looking at the readers rides and saw a 1988to99 model truck with a sraight axle conversion, the wierd thing was the front axle had a 14 bolt centersection thought i was seeing things but it actually listed it in the mag! can this be done? I know a 14bolt is one of the strongest axles and i could get another one (already have one in the rear) cheaper than a d60 front. if anyone is intrested i still have the mag at work i could find out exactly what issue next week.

Seen it. Not worth doing. It would cost you a lot more than a 60 to build. I wouldnt want a plow either.

Search here because somebody built one. It requires a lot of custom parts. The only reason to do it is just to be different.

That being said, everybody says that the 14B front would hang down too low, but they all put them out back. If it was such a plow/anchor, I think we would see more guys putting Dana 60 rears in.

I've seen 14 BFF/Rockwell hybrid steering axles before. Only problem is, unless you do custom tubes/shafts you're stuck with a centered diff! IMHO it would be way too much extra $/work to be worth the gains over running a 60.

what is the 13bolt? thought i saw something like that on a web site but cant seem to find it anymore. also i can get a 14bolt rear for dirt cheap, a couple hundred less than a 60. if i can find whoever did it and get the info i'd be willing to build it!!!

Alot of guys when they trim their 14bolt will remove the bottom bolt hole making it a 13 bolt.

Why would someone chop the bottom hole off?

Wouldn't that make the diff cover not seal at the bottom??

Many people have actually cut part of the bottom of the housing out, had the ring gear turned down to a smaller diameter and then welded a plate to seal the housing back up. That can be a 13 bolt too :D

All in the name of clearance:

after doing a little searhing on this 69 hybrid, i found a similar post on a pirate thread a lot of the guys were suggesting diamond axle or sunray engineering. i've already emailed diamond and come to find out sunray is closer to where i live. i will contact sunray after the holidays. really i am curious to see the price range compared to me building a used 60. most places i've found the cheapest 60 i can get my hands on is 800 to 1200 and still have to completly rebuild it.

The housings themselves aren't that expensive but you will still need inner c's, knuckles, spindles, brakes, etc.

A "69 hybrid" will cost you a lot more than a stock 60.

If you plan on upgrading most of the 60 anyway a "69 hybrid" could be a good way to go.

for a 69 hybrid, expect to spend at least $4k when everything is all said and done. they are a badass setup tho, thats what id run if i had deep pockets

sunray eng., 13 bolt

does anybody know anything about sunray engineering? also how hard is it to chop off the bottom of the 14 bolt and weld the plate in like pictured above?

what size tires are you running? what do you plan to do with the truck? all this bling stuff if overkill for 90% of people who wheel, so unless you are doing something crazy, its more than likely unnecessary. but if you wanna spend $5k + for an axle go for it. id just throw a 60 in it for $1k and be done with it and keep that extra money to spend else where. just my .02
