Pulling apart my 1982 14 bolt full floater...And I am kind baffled...

the spindle is threaded on the end (thats normal).

my confusion comes with the way the outer bearing pre-load and retaining setup ...The end of the spindle is threaded, so i get the 6 hole nut. but i dont understand why the snap ring is there--no snap ring groove either... never seen this, always had a second lock nut acting as a jamb nut.....

is this setup up right? or am i missing something

the last axle i built (of the same year too)

had an inner preload nut some type of washer set up (whether it be a wavy one or cage style) and an out lock/ jam nutto hold the nut in place....

I could move the snap ring around easily and the other nut was jambed up against the spindle:dunno:

You are missing something . See the keyway grooves in the nut?

Does your spindle have a keyway groove in it?

1 of 2 thigns is going on. Either:
1. Your keyway key is missing . This slides into the slot in the axle stub, and the axle nut, and keeps it from turning. THe snap ring is to keep this keyway in.

2. You have an older setup, and require the inner/outer nut. You are missing a nut, and the lock ring deals.

yep newer style 1 nut setup and missing the key to lock it in place and snap ring hold the key in place.

sooo, they keyway is missing.....

where do i find this keyway?

what are my options

--that snap ring is suppose to hold the keyway in?? that was very easy to move around back and fourth

I dont see a key anywhere for it..:sign27:

Do people have these available

The clip ring has a curved end that fits in the spindle groove to securely block the key from backing out. The clip is very thin and flimsy which makes it easy to remove with just a screwdriver and allows it to fit snugly around the spindle in the threads.Part numbers for this style spindle hardware, courtesy of KWTMECH, are: [/FONT]

mine is a 82 as well.has the inner nut and the the key and then the lock ring as was said in the other posts.there should be a groove on the upper side of the spindle.about 1/4 inch split in the threads to put the key into the nut after you tighen it against the outer bearing.

What he said.........looks like a little rectangular block that you stick in the hole and then put the snap ring on it to hold it in place. Look at the pirate link posted, great picture in there.............

rockauto or auto chain store, it's where I got mine. Switched the rears over to match the 4 prong D60.

Any self respecting hardware store should stock keys or at least square stock. Try an ace or true value and check the hardware bins
