I got new Timken seals for my 14bff hub. It's not obvious to me which way they should go in. I can take pics if needed, but from one side you can see the spring inside the seal. I assume that goes to the inside of the hub?

Related question. I've cleaned up and painted the 14-bolt, but I may have painted too far down onto the spindle to where the seal will ride. Do you think the seal will work effectively on the painted surface, or should I clean it back down to bare metal?

Were it me, I would get some fine emery cloth and take the paint off on that area, yes.

gray scotch bright or real fine cloth .

nice smooth finish is needed.

you went just 1 lip to far on paint.

Sounds good, thanks. By the way, anyone know where to source axle flange bolts? I know I can use regular grade 8, but I'm missing one and would like them to match.

you cant use reg bolts off the shelf.

there to long or short even with the lock washer.

you will break the hub if to long and need a new one.

I have made new before by cutting down a longer grade 8 and then not break the hub bolt hole area.

I'll send you a PM here in a minute.

seals

If you have not already bought the seals now is a great time for a 2 piece seal. you will get a new seal surface and seal they come as a kit. a little more money but worth the extra cost. I have used them a lot on questionable where surface never had a leak.

Interesting. Do you have a part number, or something to search on?

It's OEM spec'd for later 14BFF's, early 2000's, that happens to fit the previous 14bff hubs as well.

SKF part number is 28554.
