Guy I know has a 2003 14 bolt don't know measurements etc or gears yet but curious if anyone has put one from this era in a K5? Price is dirt cheap but wanna find out if would work before going to look at it and open it up. Thanks in advance guys!

Gonna have to change spring perches and shock mounts. It is a wider axle. By about 3" which is awesome. Gears will probably be 3.73. But could easily be other ratios

So with having to move spring perches and shock mounts/buying perches/shock mounts would it be worth $100 or should I keep looking? New to these 14 bolts.

I would think it is. Where Im at they run about $600 for an old one just yanked from an old truck. I would buy it for that price even if I had no need for it. Doesnt it already have disc brakes also?

Should but not 100% might run out there Sunday since hour from me and i will be 1/2 way there at my buddies shop setting my wifes 67 C10 cab up for blasting. But the 8 lug means gotta do front and new wheels/tires. With 6 lug 14 bolt keep wheels and tires.

6 lug 14 bolt is gonna be a semi floater. Stronger than a 10 bolt, but weaker than a full floater. You give up some strength, but you get ground clearance,6 lugs, and I think a width that matches the front. If you're not going with huge tires, a six lug SF 14 bolt is a good deal. Hard to find normally though.

EDIT: Unless you are talking about a 14FF with the aftermarket hubs, but they are crazy expensive and not sure they fit on the newer 14 bolt. Also, for 100 bucks, it's a good buy. But if you don't need it, you'll spend tons more in wheels, front axle, matching gears (if necessary) etc.

I can't remember, but in 2003 or so, didn't they change from Corporate 14 bolts to the AAM's that are currently in 3/4 and 1 ton trucks? I could be getting my years wrong though. If it is an AAM, it's a whole different animal, just the pumpkin looks similar

AAM started the new 11.5 inch ring gear axles in 2001 with the new HDs, but only in the 1 tons and 3/4 tons with a diesel. My '05 2500HD with a 6.0 had the 10.5 inch ring gear FF 14 with discs. How I wanted to put that thing under my Suburban at the time, but the wife would have killed me for raping her new truck.

All that happened is that GM spun off their corporate axle division to a stand alone company with the name of AAM. Yes, technically an older axle is a "Corporate" and the newer is "AAM" but it is still the same basic axle.

Desertrat67 and 6.2Blazer are correct. I work at a very large salvage yard, and sell these all day long for $300-$400. For that price I would buy it even if you don't use it. My nexT build (if I ever start one ) would have one of those AAM's in it, no doubt.

For $100 I'd snatch it up in a heartbeat. Where I'm at, used drum brake 14bff's run $3-500+ and the newer used ones with disc brakes run $6-900+ unless you find someone who doesn't know what they or just want it gone in a hurry... Picking it up that cheap would offset the cost of relocating the spring perches and shock mounts and you'd wind up with a wider real axle that'd more closely match the front and it'd have factory disc brakes that are way better than most after market disc brake conversions. The only thing is you may have to play with the proportioning valve to get the brake system to work the way you want it to though...

axles are $250 at pick and pull with plenty of 14 bolts to choose from.

$250 before tax for the narrower drum brake versions (like what our style trucks came with) or closer to $400 for the newer style the OP is asking about at their "premier store" in Rancho but those are rare and get snatched up as soon as they hit the yard. Nothing wrong with the older style ones though so don't get me wrong, I've just never liked how much narrower they are than the fronts and by the time you add a disc break conversion (like most of us do at some point) you're already at or above what the newer axles cost for something not as good IMO. The dismantlers that get most of the newer trucks by us want $6-900 for the newer axles (depending on yard and mileage) so if the OP can get a newer axle for only $100 that's awesome.

That's right, I knew it was something specific, but couldn't remember

I know that this isn't 100% correct. My brother has a 2000 burban that he ended up finding a guy parting a 2005 3/4 diesel so he took both front a rear axles. He ended up finding that the rear yoke wasn't 100% the same as the old 1350 yoked axles, IIRC they are just slightly smaller. And I thought there were a few other small things he told me that that ended up being different that he had to deal with to get it to work, but can't remember off the top of my head

I've seen several disk brake 14 bolts at the PnP and yes 250 plus tax so $270 OTD. And WFO sells them for $280 if you don't want to pull one.

No doubt $100 is a deal but I won't pay a dime over $300 for any stock 14 bolt.

I've never seen a single disc equipped 14bff (only drum versions) at any of the PnP's near us and when I checked with WFO they didn't have any either but said they could easily add them to one of their other axles for a couple/few hundred more. You must have way better luck than I do when you're hunting for parts :dunno:

Hopefully the OP is able to score on the one he found :woot:

I believe the 3/4 ton will fit a half ton, but the one ton will need the spring perches moved. Also, there was a change to the backing plates for the brakes. This came with the change from a bolt in style e-brake cable to a snap in one.

I know this answer is not complete. Someone please fill in the blanks for me.

Damn i find deals but seems like alot of work and never have removed/replaced spring perches on a axle before worried about that here. Found a smoking deal on 14 bolt F/F 3:73 no brake hardware or shoes, open carrier for under 2 bills. Just not sure which to get for my dang truck as 10 bolt rears scare me with the gov bomb!!!
