14 bolt mini spool

Orb of traction for the win

How are the spools/orbs in a 14b with 37" tires?
Is turning a booger on tight trails, or on pavement?

squawks on turns on pavement. Will push you straight on tight trails, more 3 point turns are needed. Not a huge deal for me. Works and haven't broken anything with 38.5 boggers.

I've ran a welded 14FF in my K5 for years with 35, 38, and 39.5" tires. Would never consider anything else for a primarily off-road truck. A lot of other guys in our club have gone this way also. Really don't notice that much of a difference on the trail when I went from a Truetrac to the welded diff in regards to turning on the trail...obviously traction on obstacles is better. Lockers like Detroits and Lock-rights don't seem to be much better because they are locked up whenever power is applied, so the only way they will unlock on the trail is if you coast around a corner...and from my experience it is unlikely you are going fast enough on a trail to be able to coast around the corner.

There is some tire squealing and scrubbing on slow speed sharp turns on the pavement but never any issues. I wouldn't want this in my daily driver but for the toy there are no problems.

Mine is just a toy, but since I don't have any way to haul it I have to keep it drivable on the road too. Thankfully we don't have vehichle inspections in my state so I can modify at will so long as it is insured. I rarely got her over 50-MPH before I started swapping axles the main concern is driving in moist weather. I know understear becomes an issue with a spool, and is compounded by big tires and further compunded by the short wheelbase. Where I live there are no straight or flat roads, and the trails tend to be more for sidebysides and Heeps (tight). I'll have a D60 with crossover steering but doubt that will make any difference in regard to the spool other than the extra weight on the front tires.

Should I just hold off till I can get a lock-right or something?
I've just never been a huge fan of welding gears together.

I drove mine to and from the trails for several years with a welded rear diff. Almost all of the trails were at least 1.5-2 hours away and I would run 65-70 mph down the freeway. That was with 35" radials and then 38" bias TSL's. A friend of mine drove his F-250 on 42's and a welded rear diff to the trails many years longer and went to several trails 4-5 hours away. It wasn't uncommon to see rain or even snow during these trips. Sure, the welded diff doesn't help handling any but I don't think a Detroit or Lock-right would be any better. At least a spool or welded diff is more consistent and not locking and unlocking on you.

Most of our trails are very tightly wooded also. If you are on flat trail then crossover steering does nothing, actually I think you lose some steering power. Crossover only helps when you are twisted up as you still have left and right steering available. I still recommend crossover, but hydro assist is the way to go for tight trails.

I had a welded 14b before. Now I have a detroit.

For the price of the detroit I don't think I would ever weld one up again. My detroit unlocks fine when it needs to. Makes a big difference not scrubbing tires all over.
