Something that's always bugged me, seems like everyone calls the 9.5, 10.5" and 11.5" GM rear ends "14 bolts" (even Dodge AAM 10.5's) because they have 14 bolts on the cover. Way different across the board, few/no parts interchange.

Maybe we should start calling Dana 60's 10 bolts?

I'm good with it

I call em:
SF
14 bolt
AAM

Seems easy enough :dunno:

Only if they're the "big hub" or HD version
nope . . . . lots of internal hub 3/4 tons getting passed off as 60

had a guy try and prove me wrong till I pulled my truck next to his and said so what do I have under mine then . ............ he shut up real quick .

14 bolt full float and 14 bolt semifloat. Everything else is AAM I don't refer to any AAM axle as a 14 bolt. It's confusing

Which AAM? 3 Versions at least.

Lots of people particularly get confused between the SF and FF 14 bolt because they both have 14 bolt covers, but don't share any parts.

The most common 10.5" is probably what most consider the "14 bolt".

A Dana 60 or 70 (or actually, most any Dana diff) uses 10 bolts on the cover, why not call those 10 bolts to make everything as vague as possible?

I've taken to telling people "the only real way to know is pull the carrier and count the bolts"

I guess I did leave that out when talking AAM axles the AAM us followed by ring gear size. I.E. 11.5 12.5

I guess this is my issue Eric:

I can't claim it with 100% confidence, but as far as I know the SF and FF 14 bolt don't share any parts. Both are called "14 bolts", to me it's an easy trap to order the wrong stuff for your diff.

Chris, do you really get that many SF customers?

Huh. I figured i was one of the few people running a nun-killer

True true. I can garuntee they share zero parts except for some bolts. Oh you know the one side adjustors on the SF might be the same as a full float.

But yah I have had guys order gears for SF 14s but get the wrong one cause they don't know there were 2. Anytime anyone asks me to do gears on a 14 bolt I ask to see the axle or see a picture so I can tell them which one.

The AAM stuff bugs me too.

I got an AAM 14 bolt I need you to gear

No such axle.

Well yah it is.

Nope 14 bolt is a corporate axle. AAM is well an AAM.

This is usually meant with a blank stare.

I use ring gear sizes for GM axles.

GM 8.5"
GM 9.5"
GM 10.5"

Seems to cover the bases well enough. Maybe it's because I come from a Ford background, they've been using ring gear sizes for years (7.5" / 8.8" / 9"). Dana axles all have unique names, so no confusion there aside from OEM application (Dodge D60 vs. GM D60).

This is why a run a ford 9". I was too confused to install a dana anything. 9" I know. And setting up gears on the bench is nice.

The front is a stockish 1/2 ton whatever.
