Might be a dumb question, but how common would a 14bolt with 4.56 gears be? Is it worth it to wait until I find one (because they ARE common) or should I just be happy to get one with 4.10 or 3.73 and pay $500 to re-gear?

Supposedly they are common, but I havent found one yet. Maybe one of these days I'll havta go pull every damn 14 bolt cover till I find a set....

They were widely used in military applications but not too often in civilian trucks. Also, why would you pay someone to regear that axle? They are easy to gear, just takes the right tools, and most can be had for cheap, if not, find someone that will let you borrow their stuff for a day or two. You can keep looking for them, but don't expect to find one too quick.

just a fyi the thick gears are cheeper than the 456 up thins. if you are going to swap ratios. and i had 1 with 456 and from miltary truck.

$500 to re-gear? No way! $300 is more like it...you can do it yourself, it doesn't take much.

I priced the gears and install kit at about $300, plus a local shop will do the re-gear for $150.
