I see a lot of 14BFF's locally on Craigslist that are $150-$200. They are generally 4.10 or higher. If I bought one with 4.10's can I swap in some 4.56's or lower as long as I use a 4.56 carrier? Or is the housing different between the split?

Same question for one that has a Govlock, just need a carrier, not a different housing, correct?

housing the same .

watch out for 84ish they had a weird pinion support bearing that's funky .

otherwise there dime a dozen .

carrier split 4.10-down and 4.56 up .

easy axle to learn how to do gears also .

and this version of 14ff gov-loc is the strongest . but some still don't like them . I my self have had no problems with them and love them .

Thanks for the info brother.

I've been wanting to pick up 1 or 2 more. Especially when I see people selling them for $150.

Another question, since I probably won't know what year these axles are let's say I end up getting on of those '84ish ones. If I install a new master rebuild kit would the funky pinion bearing matter since it would be getting replaced? Is the bearing you speak of replaceable by say a standard master rebuild kit from East Coast Gear Supply or will I have to order a specific/special bearing exactly for that year?

'84 and ' 85 have a smaller pinion support bearing on the tip of the pinion. I am not sure, but I have heard that it is a trick to find a new one.

Interesting. I have CUCV axles in my garage also waiting to be installed. Probably 84ish. I haven't torn into them yet but it would be nice if other CUCV axle owners chimed in to see what they've done.

Im not sure if you have the gears or carrier yet but dont forget about thick gears. You can run 5.13s for example on a 4.10 carrier if you buy thick gears, which are really just thicker gears that utilize a different carrier than regular gears. Might save you some trouble of locating a carrier.

As stated above the carrier break is between the 4.10 and 4.56 gear sets as it came from the factory. However if you have one that came from the factory with 4.10's you can put just about any gear ratio you want in it. The aftermarket has "thick" gear sets in the 4.56 to 5.38 range which allow you to maintain the 4.10 carrier......actually I think these thick gear sets are more common. So if you had a 4.10 axle and wanted to go to 4.56 the only reason to swap carriers would be if you have got ahold of a factory 4.56 gear set and carrier for a really good price, as in cheaper than an aftermarket thick 4.56 gear set.

Some places no longer make any gears for the 4.56 and up carrier

This! ^^^

A 4.10 and lower carrier is a better option IMO. I have the CUCV axle as well and have been looking for 5.13s or 5.38s and GM is the only gears I have seen and they are expensive! I will need to find a 4.10 carrier and thick gears or spend more on GM gear sets.

Just curious, earlier in the thread the issue of a smaller/different pinion support bearing for '84-'85 14 Bolts was brought up. I wanted to know if you've experienced this with you CUCV 14 Bolt.
