How much, if any, difference is there in the ground clearance of a late 70's 14 bolt FF compared to a rear Dana 60 from a late 70's Ford truck?

Thanks, but I have a 14 bolt also. I'm wondering about a rear Dana 60 that I may use instead of a 14 bolt if the ground clearance is more.

Seems like the D60 stock would have better clearance than a stock 14ff. But after the shaving was done I guess the rest is up to you. Ive taken around 2 inches off my 14ff and its to my liking so far.

Don't know off hand, but just by looking at them, seems there would be alot more clearance with the 60 over the 14ff.

You need to talk to jms, he runs a rear D60. Hopefully he'll see this thread.

I know one thing to watch is the spline count. Rear 60s came with both 30 & 35 splines.

Another thing to watch with rear D60's is they are breakable where a 14bff typically is not. A guy I wheel with with an older Ford truggy has a D60 rear. He runs 37" tires & has snapped 2 rear D60 shafts. He now runs chromo's to help solve that problem. I have been told that the D70 is stronger & doesn't take up much if any more GC.

If you are looking for strength & clearence check out a Sterling 10.25" from a Ford. They should offer better clearence then a 14bff & still be roughly the same strength.

The only advantage I see with a Dana 60 rear is your gearing options are better.....I wish I had a D70 in the rear instead of my 14ff sometimes.

30 spline is the FF (1.28" shafts, ~as strong as 1/2 tons). 35 spline is the SF.

Some of the older ones were the coarse 16 spline units too.

A friend runs a D60 front and D60 rear with 7.17's and a dyno proven 500hp. the rear 60 was upgraded to 70 shafts and carrier I never asked much about it. but I've seen him beat the piss out of it for a number of years.....but now it sits idley by in a "morph" stage.....Like mine :doah:

Not including newerstuff, but the only 60 rear that had 35 splines were the GM 60 HD rears, vans and campers had them. But I think they are super wide, and wouldn't think the shafts would work in a stock rear.
