14 Bolt wheel bearings

I started to rebuild my 14 bolt today, removed the drums and hubs to get ready to for the disc brake conversion. Since it was apart I decided to replace the heel bearings. I know I need to replace the inner and outter bearings but should I also replace the inner and outter cups?

If you replace the bearings replace the races as well.

were your bearings trashed?

i am building one now and i am reusing the bearings, they were in great shape and saves alot of money..

i just cleaned and re-lubed them, spin smooth like glass

my rule of thumb, is if you replace a bearing always replace/ recondition the race or surface the bearing rides on.. the old bearings make a wear pattern that the new bearings will not be friendly to IMHO

Don't replace if not needed. But you won't be able to get the outer bearing out without removing the race and snap ring. You should still be able to tilt the bearing in the race to clean and inspect. But if it's in good shape, skip replacement.

I just had to re-bearing mine and depending on where you get the bearings they are about $90 for all bearings and cups. However Summit Racing sells equivalents under 'AutoSaver' (iirc) brand. They are made by Timken, but are an economy line. I got the whole set for about $50. I rolled the dice because my truck is not a hardcore wheeler, nor does it carry the weight that the 14 bolt was designed for.

I used this.

12-18 inches of angle iron. Point side on the race and hammer it out.

Hammer and long ass chisle does the trick.

I did it with a regular 8 inch punch. The outer hub has those 4 little recesses in the hub that allow you to get at the edge of the race. Just keep going back and forth from side to side. Don't just hammer on one spot.

Also, if you haven't already gotten the snap ring out, it sometimes helps to first punch the race outboard away from the snap ring. The race is seated against the snap ring while operating and it can make the snap ring a pita to get out sometimes.
