I can get a 14bolt FF drum to drum for 250.00, is this a fair price or should I keep looking?? This is at a J/Y, the owner says he has several for me too choose from...I want one with 4.10 gears, 4.56 would be sweet but don't know if they come stock w/that...so what do you guys think?

They did come stock with 4.56's. I think $250 is too much unless it has a detroit locker in it.

Sounds too expensive $150 is about right or somewhere around the $100 range

I would try to get the price down maybe 200.00 if everything is in working order and has the gears you want. If not 150.00 is a good price. Most likely a junk yard axle has to be all rebuilt.

depends on the condition. if its got new brakes and new seals and had the gears i wanted id pay $250 (seals are $100, and drums and shoes are about $200)

if it comes with 4.56s then i think $250 is worth it, it would cost u another 400 to regear it(for ring and pinion with master install kit) if it isnt 4.56s, but its 4.10s or some ratio not useful to you, $250 is a little high $200...if its in really nice condition. $150 if its in average condition.

also, i've seen people on here state that a gov-bomb will actually make it worth less. they said an open carrier was better for some reason. i have a question on topic, were the cucv trucks the only 1 that came w/ detroit in it or was it available in civilian trucks also. any open carrier is easy to spot, if it has a locker in it, how do you tell a gov-loc from a detroit,...a sure tell-tell sign of one or the other? i'm sure the OP, would like to know the answers to these questions as well, since he is shopping for the rearend.

You install the detroit in the open carrier.

I have read that some civilian trucks came with them also.

Open carrier if you see gears when looking through the window or detroit if you see springs when looking through the window.

The gov loc has 3 cross shaft holes.
The open or detroit carrier has 4 cross shaft holes.

You can see the gear teeth in this first pic.

Nice pics.

$250 is way to much for a 14 bolt, unless it is exactly what you want.
I have bought and sold them for 50-75. My son paid 250.00 for his, but it was a fresh rebuilt axle with the exact gearing he wanted. It even had the purches already moved. Hell, we drove to Houston to give the guy 250.00 for it. It was ready to bolt to his Blazer when we got it home.

If you've got an open carrier, you can install a Detroit in it. With the Gov-Loc, no can do.
