I need to replace the bolts for the ujoint straps on my 14 bolt and I don't have them with me. They are in the garage at home. Does anyone know the size and thread pitch? I would like to replace them with capscrews since the heads of mine are chewed up and wrenches don't really work on them anymore.

Thanks
Dik

it has been a long time sence dealing w them. i think they are 5/16 28 teeth per inch. i know you need longer than they look. i would say 2 to 2 1/2 inch long. i would take one out to compare as they are funkey looking. i got mine at the dealer for like $15

5/16-24 x 1.75 2" will work as there is enough room for the bolt to run through the yoke. Be sure to check your threads though, if they are rusted the bolt might bind up in the rusty threads. And the head will have to be a small diameter, not standard 1/2" head for a 5/16" bolt. Maybe an allen head capscrew would work for you.

IIRC those bolts are also special shouldered since they locate into a non threaded portion of the yoke before the threads start. I might have a set in the tool box if needed. Like was already said they MUST have a small diameter head or you won't be able to tighten them.

I looked for a 5/16X24 allen bolt yesterday and was not able to find any. Lots of 5/16X18 though. I cleaned up the heads that had been dinged by rocks and got them tight. I would just prefer a better solution. I guess ubolts are the only way and I can't really afford that right now.

Thanks for the advice and input.

You can get new stock ones on the "HELP" rack at a parts store for about 5 bucks!...

I was looking to get away from the hex head bolts and wanted to use cap screws to avoid damaging the bolt heads. I know I can get replacment bolts and sdtraps but that doesn't fix my problem. I did't think the straps from napa were right for a 14 bolt. Thought you could only get the straps at the dealer.

Thanks for all of the input though.

If you bought the Guardsman you wouldn't have any issues with the bolt heads getting damaged. :deal:
