How do you tell?
its a 14BSF....a FF has removable axles out at the hub (8 bolts in a 4" diameter pattern) and a bit bigger diff cover.
top side by side pics are 14 bolt full-floater...
bottom side by side pics are 14 bolt semi floater...

If you snap an axle with a SF does the wheel fall off like with the 10bolt?
I know the FF doesnt.

Thanks everybody for the quick response.
Strength-wise, how does the SF compare with the FF? I'm not planning on rock crawling with a Suburban, but it will see lots of dirt and 37" tires. Do I need to budget for a FF Swap?
One last question. Is there anyway to tell what gear ratio this has without tearing into the diff? Perhaps by the VIN?
I need to change the gear oil anyway so it isn't a big deal, I was just wondering.

14bsf is a good axle, but if the shaft snaps you could lose the wheel.
14bff is stronger (strongest?) light duty truck axle out there.
Best way to figure r/p ratio is to pop the cover....its on the ring gear.

I don't recall ever seeing a snapped axle in a 14SF.
Really easy to tell from the rear of a rig, as shown in your picture, but not as defined in the drawing, the differential housing is not flat at the bottom, and angles downward on the right side. Dead giveaway.

I wouldn't worry about it. Maybe I would worry if it has a gov loc. But even then, it doesn't sound like you will be pushing it to its limit.
