14 Bolts and Big Blocks don\'t mix

So I was driving around gettin stuff done Saturday morning when I heard POP!

I checked everything out, and all seemed good in the driveway.

I thought maybe my rear driveshaft is finally starting to end it's life...

I take off down the street... All is well.

Get to the stop light, and I want to see if my TBI computer program changes did any good... /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

I hit the gas, make the tires squeal, and BAM!!! tink clunk ca-chunk... Then egine stalls and the transmission vibrates like crazy. I restart the engine, and the tranny doesn't want to go into gear

I thought, maybe those WEREN'T the right clutch bolts after all...

I get out and take a look around...

Oops...

Damn, did I break the C-clip on my SF?

It's not like the ARB was on or anything.

Maybe it SHOULD HAVE BEEN on... /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif

Crap.

I get back in. I release the brake, and try to coast backward (small slope) down my busy street...

It won't roll. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Great....

I get it in gear, forward... stalls the engine in granny low...

I get it in reverse.. AHA!! it's rolling. Back in first.. it rolls 2" and stalls the engine.

I walk home. Tell the g/f the news. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Get her to drive me back to the truck (it must have been 85 degrees out).
Take out the rear driveshaft, after it didn't want to roll backwards anymore. I got it in 1st, then in reveres to roll it to get to the driveshaft bolts.

Drive it home on front driveshaft.

The tire just starts to walk out and show the brake pads, after I get within ~ 200 yards from the house.

Get it home....

Does ARB have a LIFETIME WARRANTY???

I guess not... /forums/images/graemlins/ignore.gif

R&P looks good, Spiders Look good, C-clips look good, Center bolt/rod looks good.

ARB carrier (I think that's what that was) totally grenaded.

So the story of my life goes... those never break - right?

Now you know why GM never put BBC in front of the 14SF.

Re: 14 Bolts and Big Blocks don\'t mix

Damn. /forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif That is come carnage. ARB's are supposed to be one of the toughest lockers too. I think ARB's are warrantied but don't know for sure.

Sounds like I would be going to find a 14bff and a detroit or welded spiders.

Re: 14 Bolts and Big Blocks don\'t mix

It's a semi daily driver...

That's why I am REALLY going to miss that ARB rear...

Plus I drive it up to Tahoe to go skiing with everyone, and I am afraid of Detroit rear in the snow... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I am afraid of rear tire wear with a Detroit too /forums/images/graemlins/woot.gif

Re: 14 Bolts and Big Blocks don\'t mix

So much for me wanting a 14bolt or ARB /forums/images/graemlins/ignore.gif

Yah know this thing survived for five years with my 383...

According to Desktop Dyno my 383 was pushing 440 lb/ft and my mild BBC 408 is pushing 450 lb/ft. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

So I don't know what happened... unless the ARB just got too brittle with age?!??!??!

/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Or maybe my 408 is putting out more power than Desktop Dyno suggests???

I still haven't gotten the F.I. in tune to really know what this BBC can do?!?!??

Re: 14 Bolts and Big Blocks don\'t mix

That's differential diarrhea right there. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

It doesn't look like the 14b is what broke though, the aftermarket ARB broke.
Not the 14b's fault.

Heck after that much damage, he's probably going to be able to salvage a good deal of the rear diff. after a good cleaning.

Re: 14 Bolts and Big Blocks don\'t mix

That is also a semi floating 14bolt not a full floating 14. The FF are stronger. ARB's are not available for them though. If you destroy a 14bff carrier with the detroit you have really done some awesome damage. That carrier is beef.

Yah that's why it's time to go to a FF. I guess that's why ARB isn't making a locker for the FF - probably never. I don't consider myself one of the BIG BOYS with little 408 and little 37" tires, yet I broke one of the stronger differentials ... an ARB. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Yah, I could probably get another ARB and re-use the whole thing. Everything in there looks PRISTINE! Once the ARb junk get's taken out.

Re: 14 Bolts and Big Blocks don\'t mix

Sorry to see the damage. If that was mine I would have cried when I pulled that cover. Thursday I am getting my gears set up and maybe this weekend, my new axle in.
It is a 14SF with a new Detroit. Maybe I am glad that I didn't spend the extra 200 and get the ARB.
I have the open carrier from my SF and I am local, sorry just trying to help you out. If you want it you can have it. Send me an email [email protected] if you are interested. I also know a guy in town that has all kinds of GM stuff. I almost bought a FF for 300 with 4.10's but then I would have 6 and 8 lugs, and only one spare.

Re: 14 Bolts and Big Blocks don\'t mix

That was ~10:00 in the morning... We got record heat that day (96). /forums/images/graemlins/whistling.gif

Re: 14 Bolts and Big Blocks don\'t mix

Re: 14 Bolts and Big Blocks don\'t mix

Thanks for the offer, but I am going to walk away from the SF... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

$300 seems really STEEP! I know if I wait long enough, I can find a FF WITH a Detroit for $300...

PNP has 14FF for only $160. (plus a core). Just need to find one with 4:10s.

Re: 14 Bolts and Big Blocks don\'t mix

I have had a couple of friends of mine blow out ARB's, after only a few months of use. I tried to tell them to go with the good ol' Detroit Locker, but noooo, they have to believe every off-road article they read. Never mind the fact that ARB is buying $50,000 worth of advertising in their magazine.
