I was at my local Pick N Pull the other day when I saw two trucks, an '80 and '73 both with 14b rears. Both of them had holes on the diff cover near the center. Is that the drain plug hole or did someone put them there. It was odd because both had them. They looked like bullet holes. Is this common or what??

My 14 bolt doesnt have that. That was probably done by the yard so they can remove the cover and count the gears. I have seen a few yards that do this.

I have seen bone yards poke holes in drain pans to drain them i guess it is easier to do it that way maybe they are doing this to diffs to

Would the rears still be good if I replace the diff cover and change the fluid? What problems might be cause by the hole, rusty gears maybe?

Are they holes or perfect dents? My Blazer and Sub. have dents and on the inside are magnets.

If they are holes, then as long as they didn't get filled up with rain water they should still be OK. I would pull the covers off and have a good look before buying though. If the yard put the holes in the covers surely they wouldn't mind you pulling the cover for a better look. Check for broken teeth, any sort of shrapnel or rust on the gears. Rotate the assembly and make sure it all works smoothly. If it checks OK lowball them anyways and re-fill it and just add a new cover.
