Ive never done this one before. Just thought id see what you guys think about doing this at home? Are there any special tools needed? Or is there critical measurements that will be affected by this work?

To do it correctly you need to pull the pinion support/pinion gear out of the housing and buy a new crush sleeve and then install the new seal and set the pinion bearing preload using the new crush sleeve. Yes people have changed the seal without going through the correct procedure and have been successful but that doesn't make it correct and or guarantee that it will work.

Do you have to take the gear out, or just remove the yoke and replace the seal and crush sleeve and put the nut back on? Am i missing something?

In order to set pinion bearing preload you must have the pinion support/pinion gear out of the axle housing.

The correct way to replace the seal is to pull the pinion gear out. As said above, some people just pull the yoke and replace the seal.

If you don't get the pinion bearing preload reset correctly you will burn up the diff in short order.

thanks for the info. Im considering doing it, but then again the shop only wants $100 to do it right the first time.

If you pay them to do it at least tell them you want the old parts back and if they don't give you a crush sleeve back you better ask them where it is and why they didn't put a new one in and then have them redo the job correctly. :deal:

i would watch them do it, make sure they dont just pull the ol switcheroo.

And make sure they replace the pinion nut and crush sleeve, make sure they don't reuse either one.

On a 14 bolt its a really quick and easy job, you just need to have a torque wrench that read inch-lbs. and a strong impact wrench (or a breaker bar with a cheater).
