If its an open diff the tires will rotate the opposite direction if you lift the whole axle off the ground and spin one tire. I posi will spin both the same direction. As far as what type of limited slip or locker, you'll have to pull the cover.

The 14B gov-bomb is the strongest of the bunch, but you never know...

the gov lock might have exploded or be worn, so that trick wont always work. i know it wears your hand out, but pop the cover anywho.

Yes, even with a gov lock the wheels will spin independently, since it acts like an open diff until it senses wheel slip then locks up. Pull the cover. If it has a case like in the pic, then its open (dont mind the yellow circles). Also an open diff has a 4 "pins" in the caser (where the case bolts together) and a gov lock only has 3, also the gov loc is smooth and you can see the clutches. Or you can simply look in the glove box at the RPO codes, id theres a G80 then its a gov lock.

No G80 on the glove door. So best way is to open and look. Thanks

You can see the three countersunk screw holes that hold the two halves together. The open carrier does not use these screws.

There was a post here or on Pirate that showed what to do.

Lift up both sides of the axle - spin one tire and watch the other.... if it's a gov lock it should spin the opposite direction at first. As you spin the 1 tire faster and faster the other one will slow down, stop and then begin to spin the same as the one you were spinning.

All of the Gov Locks axles that I've seen have a rectangular, black sticker on the cover (probably 2.5"x3.5"). The sticker doesn't say anything it's just black, I believe it's simply a marker for the factory/dealer to know to use L/S additive in the gear oil.

On older stuff the sticker may be gone but you can usually see the outline of where it used to be.
