14b front axle (old thread 2005)

Re: 14 BOLT FRONT AXLE

That looks like the pinion is in the center how are you going to hook up a shaft?

Thanks for emailing the pics to me!

Re: 14 BOLT FRONT AXLE

Yes, it sure is in the center. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Im going to clock the Tcase straight down for now. But later down the road im going bigger, and coilovers, with a custom center drop T case. Basically it'll be a little monster truck. /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif

OH, and im going to build another axle for rear steer! /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

Re: 14 BOLT FRONT AXLE

I can just see it now, 14 bolts 1500.00 & Dana 60 FRT. with a DL 250.00 OBO. Thanks /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Re: 14 BOLT FRONT AXLE

Woah, thats a nice truck, what year? How much clearence between the axles and ground? Good work /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

Re: 14 BOLT FRONT AXLE

Questions:

1) What do you plan on doing for oiling for a "clocked straight down t-case"?

2) Who are you having make your front inner shafts? Are you going to start with a Superior or Yukon blank and have it splined to the 30 sp. 45 degree pa for the 14 bolt or have something completely custom built?

3) Why go with a 14 bolt center section? It has horrible ground clearance and not much of a strength advantage over a d60 center section.

4) Are you going to shave it at all?

Re: 14 BOLT FRONT AXLE

With that backwards like it is, won't you be pulling on the coast side of the teeth?

Hmmmmmmmmmm.... /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif Interesting! /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

Re: 14 BOLT FRONT AXLE

How about locker operation? I would think it would never lock? /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Re: 14 BOLT FRONT AXLE

What are you doing for gears?

Since you had to weld everything back together, why didn't you move the case to the driver's side so you could run a NP241HD or something? I don't see anything wrong with not having your transfer case output in line with the pinion shaft but I'm just wondering why you put it right in the middle.

Re: 14 BOLT FRONT AXLE

Cool... it looks like you put the frame on backwards when you built that rig /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif I hope it works out well for you!

'72. 11 1/2" at the bottom of the diff.

In answer to willyswanter:

1. I plan on using a 241 for now until I get the center drop T case. The 241 has the oil pick up on the front output shaft side of the case, so that would be at the bottom, when clocked down.

2. I was just going to have custom shafts made.

3. I went with a 14 bolt because, why not? Its something different, everyone has a 60.

4. No, im not going to shave it.

------------
Yes the outers are D60.

I will be running on the Coast side, but since its a front axle, and not going to be drive on all the time it wont be that bad.

As for a locker I was curious about that too. Itll be open for now, and if the locker doest work, I know how to weld!

Re: 14 BOLT FRONT AXLE

Its something I've thought of many times, but the only reason I would do a hybrid front axle would be to run a lightweight center section(say a 9") with the Dana 60 outers and some nice shafts. Like was noted, its really not gonna be much stronger, and since you are pushing the opposite way the gears are intended too I wouldn't be surprised at some big weakness there. Definetally something. If I were to do it you can bet that 14 bolt would have had a date with the milling machine and gained a good 2.5" of clearance.

Re: 14 BOLT FRONT AXLE

The tube is the same inner diameter as 60 tube, but its 3/16" bigger diameter then 14b tube. I dont really care about ground clearance.

Did you use some sort of jig to do your work?

[/ QUOTE ]

No I had a company do it for me, VERY nice work.
